CNG Drive on Natural Gas

C. Melchers GmbH & Co. supplies Xperion 20-foot CNG storage modules to Vietnam’s state-owned Oil & Gas Company, PetroVietnam

Traditionally, in locations where natural gas pipelines are not available or not feasible, natural gas is compressed (CNG) and transported to these locations via trailers equipped with steel cylinders.

However, there is now a more cost effective CNG transportation system available.  Xperion, which is a leading German manufacturer of advanced fibre composite reinforced products, has the solution:

Their latest product line, called X-STORE, provides the optimal balance between weight (less than 50% compared to Type 1 steel trailers) and economics (less costly than traditional Type 4 Composite Cylinders). Due to weight restrictions on trailers, the X-STORE trailers carry over double the volume of CNG compared to their steel alternatives. As such you can now transport on a 20’ X-STORE Module the same amount of CNG as on a 40’ steel long tube trailer. Subsequently a 40’ X-STORE trailer moves in one journey more CNG then 40’ steel cylinder trailers in two journeys.

An Additional advantage is that the occurrence of corrosion and fatigue is zero with Fibre Reinforced Materials. Further, X-STORE Cylinders are very safe. They consist of two shells (one Carbon Fibre and one Glass Fibre Composite). Each shell is designed to maintain all the forces resulting from nominal operation.

X-STORE strictly complies with Europe's regulation for International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, ADR under the aegis of UN Economic Commission for Europe. This regulation, apart from obvious cylinder safety and volume limit considerations, also states that no threaded fittings are allowed. As such Xperion is able to supply modules with all welded piping for increased safety. This ADR standard, together with typical CNG cylinder standards such as ISO 11439 and ECE R 110 form the certification level of Xperion making them one of the highest certified composite cylinder and trailer module suppliers in the world.

In 2009, C. Melchers introduced this transportation system to PetroVietnam and up to now, received an order of 18 Xperion 20-foot CNG storage modules. The success of this technology speaks for itself and will help to make natural gas available wherever it is needed. We are proud to offer this technology to our existing customer base and new customers.
